Secret Identities and Masks

Seems to me everyone knows who these heroes are!

I think one of the first Superhero comic I actually actually paid for myself was back in 1975, it was a Comic called The Scorpion published by Atlas Comics. I had looked at the few Marvel and DC comics on the shelf that we had here in the UK before but never actually purchased one myself, the few I did have at the time were bought for me by my mom, but the first actual one I personally handed over money for was The Scorpion No. 3. It's not exactly worth much today like some of my collection, but to me it's the most prized as it was my very first one that I payed for.

I read that comic over and over and it was that one comic that made me a Superhero fan. I was transfixed that a person wore this wonderful costume, went out fighting the bad guys, had all kinds of gadgets and did all this wearing a mask that would allow him to walk among ordinary people without them knowing his secret.

The Scorpions costume may have not been the best but to a little kid seeing these wonderful drawn characters battling each other with the hero dressed in this tight fitting costume to resemble what he had called himself was just captivating... I was sold and from then on I was obsessed with the notion that someone could so all this whilst dressed in a colourful costume with an insignia blazoned across his chest.

After this introduction to the world of superheros I had to have more... and more... and more! And then I was finally properly introduced to the world of Batman, especially when drawn by the great Neal Adams.

Looking back on my obsession for superheroes it was ultimately the fact that all this characters were doing these good deeds whilst wearing a mask, hiding who they were because they didn't want anyone to know it was them, they wanted to do all this without taking the glory and the thanks, it was this secret identity thing and the costumes that held my interest and I would probably take a guess that it's the same for many a true Superhero fan... so why have Marvel and DC, actually more Marvel than DC steered away from this one big piece of the Superhero story!

As much as I love the Captain America movies most of the time he's unmasked! Hawkeye, another of my favourites from the movies... not so much in the comics, but in the Movies he really was one of my faves, maybe it's the actor who plays him, but again no mask! Thor doesn't were a mask, but he does wear a helmet in the comics which is more or less his signature mask, but again we probably saw it once or maybe twice in the original film and then he's never worn it again. Such a shame as it was one of the most awesome recreations from the comics but wasted... of course 'Lady Thor' in 'Love and Thunder' has to have hers, but oh no, not the mighty THOR himself! If an actor refuses to wear anything, whether it be the mask or indeed a helmet, well, I would say, sorry but you signed up for this and this is ultimately what the costume includes... at the end of the day you're being paid enough.. so you're wearing it!

Secret Identities, well it seems to me everyone knows who these heroes are... I dunno, or maybe it just seems that way!

Both Marvel and DC seem to have forgotten that this is what makes these characters interesting and, well... AWESOME! Ultimately it’s the hero in the costume we’re interested in! What they can do and how they use their gifts or powers to help others less fortunate,

Make these Superhero films about the actual hero doing what they do best... to go out and save the day!

But hey... that's just my own personal opinion!
