Captain Marvel rumoured to include Mar-Vell
A few years back when I first read that there was a Captain Marvel film to be made and I saw the images that were being banded around to accompany the headline I couldn’t understand why an image of a female Captain Marvel was being used… now don’t get me wrong I’m not against female Superheroes for one bit!
I loved the Wonder Woman film and was all for Gal Gadott when she was announced to be playing the new Wonder Woman and even though I’m probably one of the biggest Batman fans around I believe Gal stole the show when she appeared in ‘Batman V Superman’… she totally embodies everything Wonder Woman and is the perfect actress to play the character, as much as Ben Affleck is for Batman and Henry Cavell is as Superman… to be honest in my personal opinion they are the perfect ‘Trinity’!
But to me as an ‘Old School’ comics reader Captain Marvel IS Mar-Vell and NOT, Ms Marvel or a female Captain Marvel! Sorry, but that’s just my opinion!
In my collection of 5,000 or so comics all separately ‘bagged’ and placed in chronological order lovingly stored in the loft I have a load of Captain Marvel comics and they are all of Captain Marvel or Captain Mar-Vell from the late 60’s to the mid to late 70’s. Wearing his iconic costume/uniform and flying through the cosmos with his distinctive ‘cosmic’ glow behind him, which always looked like flowers to me and sporting his cosmic wrist bands that if I remember correctly he used to ‘’crash’ together over his head and change places with another character, who’s name escapes me at the moment and then when his work was done… he’d bring the bands together again and he’d once again change places with the ‘other’ guy… releasing him from his cosmic prison and bringing him back to ‘reality’… very much like Thor and the crashing of the walking stick by the Doctor to change places with the ‘Thunder God’!
I can vaguely remember when the female version of Captain Marvel appeared with her neck scarf flowing in the wind, but I have to say I kind’a lost interest at that point. Plus I think the sale of the comics went into decline too!
Then some years later Captain Marvel was reborn with a new and ‘Sexy’ costume which included thigh high boots and was rebranded as Ms Marvel. The new costume was pretty striking, being the dark blue from the original Captain Marvel outfit with a bright yellow lightning bolt over the chest and down to her waist…. but to be honest, extremely sexist! ‘Thigh high boots’, come on, you may as well just said she was wearing a ‘Sexy Mistress’ outfit… and was most likely drawn like this to entice young lads to buy the comics. I’m afraid just didn’t have that effect on me and I always missed the true Captain Marvel or Mar-Vell. I do own the first edition though!
From here on Captain Marvel was recreated in various forms every now and then to try and put the sparkle back in to the name, whether it was another Kree warrior or a genetically created version of Mar-Vell himself, but none of them came close to the original.
So with this bit of good news at least we are hopefully going to be treated to the complete story of the original Kree Superhero, Mar-Vell who takes on the mantel of Captain Marvel (I wonder if we’ll also see the little daisy’s in his cosmic trail!) to protect the earth, then the story of how he passes on the mantel to Carol Danvers to become Ms Marvel who finally earns the right to once again be known as Captain Marvel!
Someone in one of the comments section of another blog I read mentioned that they thought a good actor to play Mar-Vell himself would be Alex Pettyfer… totally agree, he looks just like the character and I’ve seen him in a couple of films and he can also act pretty well too.
Either way as normal for any Superhero film, Marvel or DC I’ll be there on opening night, watching as the pages of another superhero comic comes to life on the big screen… it’s such a great time for comic fans right now, mind you 2019 seems so far away!
